William Pilato, 39, was arrested on Friday, Dec. 20, following an investigation into a crash that took place around 9 p.m. in the area of Cannon Road, said the Wilton Police Department.

According to police, when officers arrived on the scene of the crash they found that a Chevy Silverado truck had run off the roadway, struck two utility poles, and continued for about 30 yards until it came to a stop.

The crash caused the utility poles to break and fall across the roadway as well as live primary lines to come down, police said.

Officers could not approach the scene until it was secured by Eversource and the fire department. Once they were able to approach the vehicle they found it unoccupied, police said.

While investigating the crash, they received a call from Pilato who said his truck had been stolen earlier in the evening from a restaurant parking lot.

When police arrived at his home in Weston, he told officers that he came home before reporting the vehicle stolen.

After questioning, Pilato admitted in a written statement to have been driving the vehicle during the crash, police said. He was charged with interfering, evading responsibility, falsely reporting a theft, failure to maintain proper lane and failure to wear a seatbelt.

He was released and is scheduled to appear in court on Jan. 7, 2020.
